Ibiza weather is famous. For the sunshine, mainly. Being very hot. Aside from the odd thunderstorm, of course.
Unusual Ibiza weather
But mama mia, the last couple of weeks have seen Ibiza and Formentera ripped apart by savage winds and torrential rain. Such a relentlessly rainy and windy season has never been seen. Old Ibicenco gentlemen can be seen with their morning Hierbas in the local bars, squinting at the sky with a puzzlement, shaking their heads.
Wild winds
Just yesterday, for example, wild winds blew down and crumpled a large swathe of the security fencing around Ibiza airport in one hour of vicious battering. The authorities closed the ports of Ibiza and Formentera as waves several metres high hit the coastline. They’re back open now but Ibiza and Formentera are still on high alert for extreme weather.
Landslide
A small landslide was reported, apparently squashing several boat houses in Porroig. Then we heard that part of the roof of Can Guerxo sports centre in San Jordi had been ripped off by the same ferocious 90km per hour winds.
Toppled trees
Trees were toppled all over the island, with 2 fallen pines causing havoc by completely blocking the San Josep road at KM15. Another fell on the country lane between San Juan and San Miguel. Followed by another on the Cala Llonga road, one on the San Rafael – Santa Eulalia road and an olive tree on the Ca Na Negreta road. UFFF!
Dreaming of Ibiza summer
We at Ibiza villas 2000 are battening down the hatches. We’re lighting a nice cosy fire and enjoying the decadence of an extra duvet. We know that the glorious Ibiza weather will be back soon. Before we know it, we’ll be back in beachwear, sipping cool cocktails on a gorgeous Ibiza beach and wondering what it was like to ever feel cold. Oh. Yeh. 😀
