Room 39 @ Pikes Hotel Ibiza | Insiders restaurant guide 2017 by Tim Sheridan

Pikes Hotel Ibiza

The legendary Pikes Hotel Ibiza is somewhere I’ve popped into over the years but rarely hung around for. One rarely does with hotels unless you are staying there. So I’ve passed through once or twice, had a look around just for the Wham of it, but never experienced it fully.  This year is different however as I’ve been DJing there. So I’ve seen first hand what is going on. And I like it! I’ve had the legendary Sunday lunch, which was good. But now I am here to review the restaurant properly.

Balearic Port Merion

It’s a little off the beaten track and close to San Antonio, although you wouldn’t know it. It has loads of car park space and is pretty easy to find. It’s pleasantly quiet when the music stops, a long entrance provides drama as you navigate around the sprawl. It is randomly set out with many small outhouses and buildings. Resembling something like a Balearic Port Merion. Once past the famous pool and bar, you take steps up to the highest point of the complex and admire impressive views across the beautiful campo.

Eccentric

It’s got a quaint, slightly scruffy vibe which I really like and the staff are friendly and on-the-ball. Eccentric knick-knacks abound. Despite the Ibicenco feel to the space, this is English-owned and the menu is about as English as it gets. I was a little disappointed initially. I mean, have you ever been out to an English restaurant? Anywhere? But I was pleasantly surprised immediately by the waiter bringing an extremely impressive red.

Catnip to a carnivore

I’m no sommelier but I know my vines. This was a blended Grenache from Terra Alta. The name La Fou meaning ‘ravine’ was appropriate for the deep and rich qualities. It impressed the hell out of me. I was definitely ready for some meat. This red was like catnip to a carnivore. Now I was glad I was in an English joint. If you will excuse the pun.

Modern take on a British staple

The menu was basic but I like that. Too much choice makes for a chaotic kitchen. Less is more. With just two starters to choose from, I went for the bread and dips. A huge loaf arrived, easily enough for four. Freshly baked with 4 frankly outstanding dips. It was very good and I felt terrible that most of it was wasted. But. I had ordered the steak, a 31-day aged fillet & the red wine was turning me into a monster. I needed that meat badly! I was very pleased when it came. Very well presented and cooked. Barely cooked of course I should say. Crispy shavings of veg and pureed root crops were nicely done. A very modern take on the British staple.

Authentic Balearic vibe

Had to have Eton Mess afterwards, of course. There isn’t much in the way of English cuisine, and even less that is entirely native. Can’t say that about this though. Uniquely English. It came well presented and in a generous portion. A perfect end to a surprisingly authentic British dinner. Highly enjoyable in wonderful surroundings. I recommend Pikes Hotel heartily. Its daytime parties are excellent and maintain an authentically Balearic vibe. The food in Room 39 is spot on and its evenings classy and long. Damn good hotel too. Contrary to popular belief, however, the drinks were not free. I can confirm though, that there is enough fun and sunshine for everyone.
