Kumharas; A hidden gem of hippy Ibiza in the heart of San Antonio Bay

2014-06-30 19.05.17

Here at Ibiza Villas 2000, we could easily say that Kumharas is one of our top three favourite sunset locations. Hidden down a little street just off the far stretch of what locals call ‘the bottom Bay Road’ this gorgeous beach front location is the last thing you’d expect to find amongst the more commercial English bars and souvenir shops that this area is full of.

But as you take the turning down to Kumharas towards the sea, with the ancient stone ‘torre’ in front of you as a landmark amongst the neon signs and karaoke bars, you could be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled upon a little hippy paradise more often found in the north of Ibiza.

Kumharas is situated in a beautiful little coastline cove with a view of the sunset every bit as good as the better known bars of the famous ‘sunset strip’ across the other side of San Antonio. Drinks are dispensed from the ancient tower itself, and the terraces are filled with bustling, efficient staff who provide table service right down to the beach area.

There are plenty of tables and padded benches, but if you’re hoping to get a frontline view of the sunset, you’re better off booking in peak season; a frontline view of this beautiful part of Ibiza is well-worth pre-planning for.

The sunset soundtrack at Kumharas is renowned for being diverse and eclectic with a fantastic array of international musicians, DJ’s and rappers bringing their own unique talents to the sundown set and making Kumharas stand out from the crowd when it comes to authentic Ibiza chill-out experiences.

From lesser known artists from across the globe, to big names such as Nightmares on Wax and Daddy G from Massive Attack, you never really know who is going to turn up and perform, given that Kumharas are not into doing massive promotions of their venue, allowing word-of-mouth and their loyal following of locals to do the talking for them. And it’s a formula that works, as Kumharas has become a stalwart island favourite over the years without any massive fanfare.

As the sun sets, the crowd gets to their feet; some head to the restaurant that serves a gorgeous menu of Asian influenced meat and vegetarian dishes served in the Moroccan inspired restaurant at the back of the venue. Here you can sample some of the finest food on this part of the island while curled up on cushions with low-level tables in typical Ibiza hippy style. Others get up to wander around the market where there are numerous stalls selling fabulous clothes, jewellery and trinkets from all over the world; it’s an authentic Ibizan market experience that feels more like an original souk than the other so-called hippy markets you might find on the tourist trail.

And if the eating and shopping are not a great enough diversion, soon after the  sun sets, the music ramps up a gear and the dancefloor fills up with happy, smiling people dancing in front of the decks. There is no ‘VIP’ at Kumharas; the DJ booth here is a large wooden table where you can dance face to face with the fascinating cast of characters playing the tunes. The atmosphere is fun, friendly and inviting and always full of laughter, aided and abetted by some of the best cocktails you will taste on the island!

These are all the elements that make Kumharas one of our favourite ‘must-visit’ spots on the west coast of Ibiza. Make sure you add it to your list of places to visit…your first visit will not be your last – we guarantee it!
