Ibiza water table at highest level for 10 years

Ibiza water

The Ibiza water table measured in the underground aquifers for the month of January reached its highest level for 10 years. All thanks to the higher than average rainfall this winter which we reported on earlier this week.

Stable and normal

The Ibiza water table, having languished at a dangerously low level over the past couple of years is now considered to be stable and at normal levels. It may even rise more as it takes a little while for the rains to sink below the earth into the underground aquifers.

Ibiza gains most

Although most of the Balearics have seen an increase in the water table, Ibiza has benefited the most by far from the recent spate of stormy weather. The Ibiza water levels increased from 56% during December to a whopping 76% for the month of January, a respective increase of over 30% in one month! Just check out the rainfall graph below:

The islanders are cheering, make no mistake! Speak to pretty much anyone who lives in Ibiza all year round and they’ll tell you that the winter rains are a blessing for the earth, so parched from the hot, dry Ibiza summer. Our whole lives revolve around water, which we often don’t remember until there’s a shortage of it.

Wine crisis!

Last year, for instance, there was a shortage of boutique wines in the San Mateo region of Ibiza due to the lack of rain. This was serious! It certainly got the attention of yours truly *hic* 😉

Ibiza water: the low down

Forgive my little joke. The state of the Ibiza water table really does affect every single part of island life. So although we’re cheering at the great news that the Ibiza water levels are healthy this year, that doesn’t mean we can now forget about responsible water use. If you’d like to know more details about the Ibiza water shortages, check out the short and informative video below made by the Ibiza Preservation Fund.

As a reputable Ibiza villa rental company, it’s our responsibility to make sure all our guests are aware of the issues Ibiza has with water shortages in the summer. We at Ibiza Villas 2000 recommend taking short showers, reusing towels more than once if possible and turning off the taps whilst you clean your teeth. If many people take these small steps, then we’ll be helping to keep the Ibiza water levels healthy all summer. And that’s what we’d call a perfect happy ending 🙂
