A Quiz Night with a Difference!

Contrary to popular belief, there is still masses going on in Ibiza during the winter months. One of the many plus points of living here is the amount of interesting and often random social events that pop up throughout the supposedly quieter time of year on the island.

Last night was no exception, as some of the Ibiza Villas 2000 team trooped over to a beautiful finca in the middle of the island for a quiz night. This first ‘El Quiz’ event was put together by Ibiza Rocks PA Extraordinaire Aimee Hodgson and her partner George Lewis of The Bar Ibiza, and was hosted by their friends at the stunning Las Cicadas guest house, a few minutes’ walk from the village of Santa Gertrudis.

In typical Ibiza style, the quiz took off rather later than planned as island residents enjoyed a few drinks and socialised in the courtyard, catching up with old faces not seen for a while, and that you often only come across in the quieter winter months when the population of the island has thinned out.

The annex to the finca was set up with a bar serving beer, wine and a huge pitcher of really authentic Margarita on tap, accompanied by some amazing Mexican-style nibbles coming out of the adjoining kitchen. Large wooden tables, where we assembled our eclectic teams of quiz fanatics, were soon laden with plates of guacamole and chips, quesadillas and ceviche, as we lined our stomachs in preparation for getting the old grey matter into gear.

So what is ‘a Quiz Night with a Difference’? Well, we can now reliably inform you it involves copious amounts of booze, some fantastic food, lots of yelling and laughter and various whistles and horns to announce the fact you have the answer – or at least that you think you have! There was the usual sprinkling of people who claim to have absolutely no general knowledge, but proved to be awesome in action!

In between rounds of some of the most bizarre and diverse questions you have ever heard, there were numerous breaks in the proceedings for more food and drink. There was much laughter and teasing over points scored or lost, as the teams had to pass their papers across to neighbouring tables to be marked. This resulted in many good-humoured accusations of sabotage and arguments over pedantic misspelling of words!

It’s safe to say we all learnt something new throughout the evening. For example, did you know that Arachibutyrophobia is a fear of having peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth? No, neither did we, but we guessed correctly and went on to win the competition! Our prize was a bottle of champagne and a photo opportunity of our team posing in plastic silver crowns. Oh, the glamour!

Everyone agreed the first El Quiz was a great success – and we’re not just saying that because we won! This fabulously rowdy and riotous night promises to be a really fun ‘off-season fixture’ in the Ibiza social scene.

See you at the next one!
